India need to Build Its Own Operating System

India is a key player in the global digital economy, with one of the largest pools of highly skilled IT professionals in the world. We’ve built world-class software for others, powered countless global tech products — yet, we still don’t have our own PC or smartphone operating system built entirely from scratch.

Most of our devices run on operating systems developed in the US. Even for mobile, we largely depend on open-source platforms like AOSP. But here’s the question — what happens if one day these companies restrict access for India?

We’ve already seen recent incidents like Nayara Energy’s case, which highlight the risks of over-dependence on foreign technology. The operating system is the foundation of the digital world — without it, hardware is useless.

It’s time for Indian companies, startups, and our talented IT community to think big. Building a secure, independent, and scalable Indian OS is not just about technology — it’s about digital sovereignty.

I’m ready to contribute if an opportunity comes my way. The question is — are we ready as a nation to take this leap? 🇮🇳
